The coelacanths are lobed finned fish, primarily found along the eastern coast of Africa. The West Indian Ocean species of coelacanths ranks in the critically endangered list. Living fossils of this type are meticulously preserved for posterity.
The threatened fish are closely linked to both the lungfish and the now extinct Devonian fish. The coelacanth gets its name from the Greek words ‘koilos’ and ‘akantha’ which literally translates to hollow spine.
They are huge in size and can also be referred as plump. They have a life expectancy of 60 long years. They measure around 6.5 feet in length and weigh approximately 200 pounds.
The cosmoid scales present on its surface acts as an armor against predators. The nocturnal hunters feed on small fish in the sea. They possess eight swift fins and a royal tail for agile motion in the water.
Interestingly coelacanths are found to live in underwater caves. Grand Comore and Anjouan Island witness huge numbers habitation in its crevices. Typically they dwell in depths of 100 to 500 m in the daytime.
