The Mitsukurina owstoni remains a unique species of shark. Sometimes, the goblin shark can be known as a “living fossil”. Of the family called Mitsukurinidae, this shark remains the only extant species, which appeared for over one hundred and twenty-five million years ago. This shark features tough jaws containing sharp nail-like teeth and a flattened, elongated snout. When this shark is matured, it’s often three to four meters long.
One amazing feature of the shark is that it can grow bigger constantly. The shark can be found in seamounts, submarine canyons, and upper continental slopes throughout the globe at a greater depth of one hundred meters. In most cases, you will find adults goblin shark than juveniles. The shark has small fins, a flabby body and sluggish in nature. The shark feeds on crustaceans, cephalopods, and teleost fishes. The long snout of this shark is protected by a small Lorenzini. This helps the shark to experience electric fields generated by near prey.
